Ama Ghana’s life is a shining example of hope and perseverance. Rising above her orphaned past, she built a family of 30 children and continued to open her heart and home to other orphans. Though life took an unexpected turn, leading her children to seek greener pastures and face difficulties. Her sorrow deepens when she hears the bad treatment her children go through in foreign lands.
Ama Ghana’s story inspires us to hold on to faith. Will she find deliverance, and if so, who will be her saving grace? “God who gave the hoe the strength to mound the soil, will see to it that the yam yields bigger” says a Nigerian proverb.
This sculpture piece was inspired by the song “Ama Ghana” by a Ghanaian highlife music legend Agyeman Opambour. Ama Ghana is a personification of my country, Ghana. As her child and finding myself in a foreign country, I pictured her in her heyday and sculpted her. She’s seen beautifully adorned in her precious regalia and breastfeeding her child.
Her gaze suggests paying close attention as she watches her children play in the field of abundance-a metaphor for “Ama Ghana” as captured by the sculptor.
